Is a Velvetiser worth it?

Sharing is caring!

Velvetiser Hot Chocolate promises the best in velvety hot chocolate, but is it worth the hype?

One minute it’s summer and the next hot chocolate season creeps in. You may of seen the adverts for a Velvetiser and thought about purchasing one. Instant cafe style hot chocolate on tap sounds perfect to cheer up cold days. Before you stir the pot here are our thoughts.

First, What is a Velvetiser?

A Velvetiser is a hot chocolate making device created by Hotel Chocolat.

Similar to a milk heater but it contains a magnetised stirring system to whisk and heat milk (of your choice) with chocolate. Any chocolate can be used if chopped finely enough but specific Hotel Chocolat sachets work best (of course). Any milk or milk substitute can also be used.

How to use a Velvetiser

These meticulous steps were written by Jordan, Alex’s husband, who is the head Velvetiser Master in the household.

 Equipment:

  • Velvetiser
  • Normal to large spoon
  • Scales
  • Small bowl
  • 227ml/8oz mug/cup
  • Hot water
  • for multiple drinks a small plate or covering that will fit on top of your mugs/cup

Ingredients:

  • Chocolate broken into small pieces
  • Milk
  1. Prepare your area
  2. Pour hot water into your mug to warm the mug (if you making multiple drinks feel free to cover them with a small saucer/plate or other covering)
  3. Plug in your velvetiser
  4. Take the lid off the Velvetiser and pour milk into the Velvetiser up to the mark line
  5. Using the spoon, small bowl and the scales weigh out roughly 30-40g of small chocolate pieces depending on taste into the small bowl on top of the scales. (Hotel Chocolat sachets are preweighed)
  6. Add these chocolate pieces to the Velvetiser by pouring them from the bowl
  7. Seal the Velvetiser with the lid and press the on button

Extra steps for making multiple drinks:

  1. Get another bowl of chocolate ready as in step 4
  2. Make sure you pour out the first volume of hot chocolate evenly into your warmed mugs then replace your mug coverings
  3. Wait for the light on the on button to go off then pour out the hot water in your mug and pour in the hot chocolate
  1. Repeat steps until you have run the process an amount of times equal to the number of drinks you require
  2. Rinse out Velvetiser and wash with the general hand washing
  3. Unplug Velvetiser and put the base away
  4. Put the scales away
  5. Clear up the small bowl, the spoon, put away any remaining chocolate
  6. Serve mugs with coverings to avoid drinks cooling down too quick
  7. Enjoy!

The Pros and Cons

It’s better for single person use. It doesn’t make the drinks very hot so you can drink it straight away but you have to be wary of it cooling down quick especially when making multiple drinks.

However it makes very nice creamy hot chocolates and is easy to clean.

Jordan says

“It makes me feel bored when waiting for it to finish. And frustrated when the drinks cool down too quick. But it makes me feel homely when I drink a nice hot chocolate from it. I would recommend it for a sole person.”
