Fun ideas for custom cakes

Converse are a classic shoe brand synonymous with canvas shoes. Would you eat a cake in the shape of a shoe?

Back in 2015 I was commissioned to make a cake based on a client’s favourite pair of shoes! I had never tackled something like shoes before but I thought I’d give it a go. I didn’t take too many pictures at the time but I thought I’d post what I had.

Converse cake: Step by Step

First the shoe

First I baked a rectangular cake which I then carved into shape using a sharp knife, many research images and small cuts.

Next I gave it a crumb coat it and covered it in buttercream

I created a black fondant squoval to represent the foot hole. 

I covered the cake in red fondant to form the ‘canvas’ of the shoe, to achieve this I first created a tongue up the centre of the cake and then two side pieces.

Next I created eyelets with metallic paint on the back of the paintbrushes pushed lightly in the areas where they should be.

Then with white fondant I created laces, and added texture with a cake decorating tool and criss-crossed them up the shoe.

Using a jagged sugar craft tool I created a stitching pattern all around the shoes following the design on a real converse shoe to compare it too. 

Next with white fondant I created a toe piece and label for the tongue and the back. The back of the shoe needs a red strip with two rows of stitching round it.

Finally I put a line of white icing edged in black around the whole shoe, apart from the front where I applied a larger textured piece, this was to represent the shoe. I then stuck the back label on! 

Converse Cake: Next the box

First I baked and shaped the cake into a rectangle (unfortunately turns out I didn’t have a suitable tin so took a few tries!)

Crumb coat with buttercream and then covered the whole the thing in black fondant.

Next I made a pale brown colour, rolled it out and cut it into 8 strips to put around the bottom of the box.

Finally I painted on the details and a birthday message! 

I don’t think it turned out too bad for a first attempt!
