Simple DIY ideas for displaying crafts and jewellery

Display boards for selling crafts are a key part of craft show kit.

If you are taking place in Summer craft shows now is the perfect time to get yourself prepared.

Our Display Boards

For summer fetes and craft shows we need interesting ways of displaying jewellery.

We had bought various pieces from shops and online however most options we found were really expensive. For example we bought a white and teal T bar bracelet holder from Homesense and a flat velvet earring holder from eBay. We also bought mini easels to decorate as price signs from The Works.

But to supplement these we also decided to make some of our own, so in this post we are going to show you how to make four different display stands.

Really simple cushion display boards

For this all you need is a box to set it in (we used a box that originally had a perfume set in), packaging foam or similar, and thick fabric (we used a co-ordinating jersey).

How to create it

First we cut the foam to size, I left just enough gap so it fit snugly in the box once covered. Next we measured our fabric to fit around the foam, when wrapping you need to cut up straight to each corner so that you can fold it around, then simply turn it over the wrapped foam and use dress makers pins to pin it in place.

The thickness of the fabric is important as when you attach your jewellery on the front you can use (and remove) pins without damaging it

Photo frame cork display boards

To make the photo frame cork board you need a photo frame which can stand up, a thin sheet of cork and a hot glue gun or super glue.

This is very simple to make. All you need to do is remove the photo frame’s glass and use this to measure your cork (you won’t need the glass after that). We used two pieces of cork as it was quite thin and put some hot glue in between them. When you are happy with your cork sheet pop it in your photo frame, apply glue to the back and put on the back of the photo frame, bending down any metal tabs if there any.

Photo frame earring display boards

This is the most difficult of the four to make but I feel the most useful and effective. For this you need scissors, photo frames, a thick ribbon, a hot glue gun (and possibly super glue) and a fine net material. You won’t need the backs of the photo frames (we’ll show you what to do with those with the fourth design) or the glass anymore.

How to create it

First, measure out rectangles of fabric using the paper inserts of the photo frames, it’s best to have them slightly too big so you can trim them down after, also you don’t want the fabric too stretched otherwise none of the earrings will stay in when you fold it up for storage.

Then, apply the hot glue to the photo frame, side by side, carefully sticking and really pushing on the fabric. When both photo frames have the material securely attached (you can go round with the hot glue again after if needs be) you need to put them together right side to right side so that the long sides are up facing you. This is the side you are going to stick the ribbon to to make it like a book.

First you want to apply glue (this is where you might need the super glue!) to one frame and stick on the ribbon, then repeat with the other frame.

Leave to dry and you are ready to slip on your earrings-use rubber backs to keep dangly earrings in place! You can also use safety pins to attach other types of jewellery to the frames.

Necklace displays

These displays made using the back of the photo frames can be used to display necklaces and bracelets. All you need to make them is the photo frame backs from above!

With our photo frames the backs were made out of thin wood however sometimes they are cardboard. Either is fine for the project. Wood will obviously be stronger then cardboard but in turn also harder to cut! We had three boards and decided to cut them differently to display different jewellery.

One we cut into a neck shape using sellotape to get matching semi circles and the other we cut small “v”s into to hang smaller pieces of jewellery on.
