Top tips for the spookiest of celebrations
Celebrating Halloween at home is a fun way to break up the dark days of Autumn without rushing to the Christmas season.
Halloween is becoming a bigger celebration in this country year upon year. From stock filling the shops to decorations in peoples homes. Whilst trick or treating is generally a reserve of busy towns, a good movie night is always a fun way to celebrate!

How do you Halloween at home?
People celebrate Halloween differently, across the world and across the UK. Some still see it as an ‘imported American holiday’ whilst others think it is as important as Christmas.
Personally we love decorating and celebrating it all October long. We don’t focus too much on Halloween night itself but instead celebrate a spooky month with decorations, themed food and fun. After the rush of summer Autumn can appear cold and dark so it’s nice to break this up.
Last year we bought lots of extra Halloween themed lights as we felt the effects of the darkness. I am so glad we did. Decorating the house for Halloween has certainly sparkles up our moods!
I find as the Summer turns to Autumn that the dark nights really play havoc on my mental health. Filling the house with soft fairy lights and reflective glitter really helps boost my mood.

Celebrating Halloween at home with favourite traditions
Our favourite Halloween traditions include carving pumpkins, watching Halloween films (this year we are going to try movie bingo), playing Halloween games and eating all the themed snacks!
We love creating themed movie nights to encourage ourselves to really focus on the film and enjoy the moment! This year on all our socials we have been trying to create content fortnightly based around a film; it will be no different for spooky season!
Decorating the house is a simple and traditional thing to do. Largely pagan, positioning scary things around your house is thought to ward off even scarier spirits. Decorations are easy to come by nowadays and are available in most home stores and supermarkets. A classic decoration is the humble pumpkin. Whether the vegetable or made of ceramic or paper; a decorated pumpkin is a great addition to the Halloween home. Last year we painted some pumpkins and have more information about that here!
Our Halloween countdown calendar stretches out the fun all month long. We also like to try and create some themed crafts such as glittered candles or painted (plastic or ceramic) pumpkins.
Oh and dressing up the dogs of course!
Favourite places to shop 2024
Whilst I’ve noticed this year Halloween decorations seem to be a little less in shops (perhaps they will come in more in October?) there are still some great ranges out there at the moment. I’ve also noticed lots more ceramic and sturdy decorations and homeware which should last from year to year. This is much better for the planet (and your wallet in the long run!)
ASDA has a great selection of items at supermarket prices including (Disney) bedding, decorations, costumes and my favourite this year their pumpkin homeware range.
Hobbycraft has a great range of decorations and DIY craft items this year. I’m very impressed by the size of their range.
Poundland always have a great selection of cheap and spooky items
More and more shops every year do tend to include a little spooky magic in their ranges.
