Carving a Pumpkin Inspiration

Sharing is caring!

A Halloween DIY Craft

Carving a pumpkin is a classic activity to do on Halloween night. Previously we shared some painted pumpkin inspiration which is perfect for longer lasting Halloween decorations. However a carved pumpkin has a much more limited life.

Below are some pictures of some the fun designs we have created over the years to give you inspiration for your own spooky designs!

We recently attended Bells Pumpkin Patch which has an amazing range of pumpkins to pick from. Pumpkin Patches are a relatively new concept in the UK but one that is really taking off. Be sure to check if there is an independent patch or business near you you could support this Halloween

Top tips for carving a pumpkin

  • get a pumpkin a size you can handle
  • draw a wiggly shape on top for easy cutting (try a star-ish shape with straight edges) and less likely to fall in!
  • carve it out internally as much as you can. A thinner side is a lot easier to cut detail into.
  • plan your design on paper
  • don’t go too big
  • draw your design on in pen first
  • go bold and simple for easier carving
  • start with small cuts
  • cocktail sticks can be used to fix some mistakes
  • try a pumpkin carving kit for different blades to cut the skin

Technique ideas for decorating pumpkins

  • classic cutting and removing large shapes
  • lightly carving the surface off to different depths. This way light shines through creating different tones
  • using cocktail sticks to create stick on features such as horns, ears etc
  • carve the back as well for a round experience
  • or why not try painting the pumpkins
