How to make fluffy sock animals!

Sharing is caring!

An easy upcycling craft for odd socks!

Maybe the washing machine eats them but its often the case that you end up with odd socks. Today I am going to take you through the step-by-step process of a very quick odd sock up-cycling craft.

We are currently in the chilly months of winter where fluffy socks are a must and if your house is anything like ours you will often find yourself left with odd socks (where do the missing socks go?!) or with broken elastic on your favourites (boo!).

What do you need to make odd sock animals?

For this craft all you need is a pair of socks, stuffing, sharp scissors, thread and a needle

How to make odd sock animals

  1. Cut the foot off the sock. This leaves you with a tube from the ankle up and the foot. Set the foot aside for now.
  2. Turn the tube inside out and do a running stitch along the bottom just through one layer of material.
  3. Pull and gather this as you go
  4. Next do a running stitch around 3/4 of the top section, leave with loose thread and not tightly gathered yet
  5. Turn the tube the right way round through this opening
  6. Fill with stuffing
  7. Finish off the top stitches and pull tight
  8. Check it is fully gathered at both the top and the bottom. If there is any gaps just do some stitches through from the outside.
  9. Next decide if you want any extras. I added a tail and two feet, you could add four feet depending on your animal or nothing at all. My socks had a pre-sewn face but you could add details here to create a face with simple stitches or add ons.
  10. For my tail I used the toe of the sock with the thick edge as shape reinforcement. Again I turned it inside out used running stitch (this time through both halves) and pulled LIGHTLY so it was slightly gathered (not fully). I then turned it round before stuffing it. I finished the tail off from the outside before attaching it to the raccoon’s back!
  11. For the raccoons feet I cut out two shapes, turned them wrong side out, sewed, flipped, stuffed and then attached!

Tadah! A very cute creation from just a singular odd sock! Another great use of odd socks is Gonks and you can find loads of projects for them online.
