If you are looking for a crafty way to make Christmas decorations which are cuddly cute and totally unique this may be the post for you. If not we also have a whole host of other Christmas craft ideas.

How to use felt to create Christmas decorations

Felt decorations are a simple and effective way to create a Christmas feel. You could make a whole collection of decorations to a theme, a trend or even just a selection of Christmas icons.

What do you need to create felt Christmas decorations?

First up you need sheets of felt (we’ll talk about other types of felting in another post). Try The Works for simple felt sheets or Hobbycraft for fun designs.

Next you’ll need a pen to mark your designs

Scissors to cut your shapes

Glue (easier) or thread (neater and more secure) to attach your pieces together.

Ribbon, to hang the finished piece

Teddy bear stuffing or cotton wool

Decorative items such as pens, glitter, glitter glue, sequins, fabric scraps, bells etc

And perhaps most importantly, an idea

Step by Step instructions

  1. Once you’ve brainstormed your ideas the first thing you’ll want to do is mark your shape on the wrong side of the felt. You need two pieces of felt per decoration.
  2. Next you want to cut out your pieces. Depending on your designs you will want wrong side to wrong side (as in the side of the fabric you don’t want to see) so you may need to flip your design before drawing and cutting. A paper template can work well for trickier designs.
  3. Now you want to decide which is up and down for your piece and attach a loop of ribbon so its ends will be hidden inside
  4. Then decorate the front any way you wish!
  5. Next step is to glue or sew the two main pieces together leaving a gap so they can be stuffed. If gluing you want to apply glue on the wrong sides, keeping the right side facing out on both and press together-raw edges should not affect felt. If sewing its up to you if you want to have the right sides facing each other whilst you sew the edges leaving enough space to turn it back through itself before finishing or sew it on the exposed edge; either way remember to leave a gap unsewn for stuffing.
  6. Stuffing time! Take some stuffing and fill your shape through the gap you left previously in the stitching.
  7. Now its time to seal up the whole and ta dah!
  8. Hang up and admire!

Of course you don’t have to limit yourself to just Christmas decorations as this method can lend itself to all sorts of decoration themes and holidays!
